When you start comparing probiotic supplements, the number of strains can quickly become another number to worry about.

One product contains a single probiotic strain. Another has five. A third advertises 15 or 20 strains across the front of the pack. It is easy to assume that the product with more strains must offer more benefits.

Probiotics do not work quite that neatly.

A well-studied single-strain probiotic can be a very sensible choice when you are looking for a specific benefit. A multi-strain probiotic brings several different probiotic organisms together and may suit someone looking for broader everyday digestive support.

Research has not shown that multi-strain probiotics are automatically more effective simply because they contain more strains. In a systematic review of 65 randomised controlled trials involving 10,863 participants, probiotic mixtures were not consistently better than corresponding single strains across the conditions studied. Some individual mixtures did perform better in particular situations, while some single strains performed just as well or better.

So the useful question is not, “How many strains can I get?”

It is, “What do I want the probiotic for, and does this formulation make sense for that purpose?”

First, what exactly is a probiotic strain?

You may see long names on a probiotic label that look like they belong in a microbiology textbook. Fortunately, you do not need to understand all the naming rules to choose a probiotic. You only need the basic idea.

Probiotic organisms can be identified at different levels. A simple way to picture this is:

Genus → species → strain

The strain is the more specific identity of the microorganism.

For example, Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus is a species. LGG is a particular strain belonging to that species. Another strain belonging to the same species may share some characteristics, but we should not automatically assume that every effect shown for LGG applies equally to every L. rhamnosus strain.

That distinction matters because probiotic research often depends on the particular organism being studied. A large systematic review examining 228 probiotic trials found substantial evidence that probiotic effects can vary according to both the probiotic used and the health condition being studied.

For someone buying a supplement for general digestive support, you do not need to memorise strain codes. It is still worth looking beyond a vague phrase such as “probiotic blend” and checking which organisms the product actually contains.

What is a single-strain probiotic?

A single-strain probiotic contains one specific probiotic strain as its active microbial component. The biggest advantage is clarity.

If researchers have studied a particular strain at a particular dose for a particular purpose, a product containing that same strain can be easier to evaluate. You know which organism you are taking, and the entire CFU count belongs to that strain.

Suppose a product provides 10 billion CFU of one probiotic strain. You know that the stated 10 billion CFU relates to that organism.

This can be particularly useful when a probiotic has been recommended for a defined reason.

For example, individual strains of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, Bacillus coagulans, Saccharomyces boulardii and other probiotics have been studied for specific gastrointestinal situations. A practical review of 249 clinical trials found that the most appropriate probiotic choice depends on factors such as the specific strain or mixture, the condition being addressed, dose, formulation and product quality.

A single-strain formulation can therefore be attractive when you want a more targeted probiotic and there is good evidence behind that exact organism.

The limitation is equally straightforward. One strain gives you one probiotic organism. Someone looking for a broader mix of probiotic organisms may prefer a different formulation strategy.

What is a multi-strain probiotic?

A multi-strain probiotic contains two or more probiotic strains in the same product. Some contain only a few. Others may contain 10, 15 or even more.

The rationale is that different probiotic organisms have different characteristics. A manufacturer can therefore combine several organisms within one formulation rather than building the product around a single strain.

A multi-strain probiotic might include different members of the Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium groups, for example, alongside other probiotic microorganisms.

That creates broader organism diversity within the capsule. It does not automatically prove that the finished product will provide more benefit.

This is an important distinction because supplement labels often make strain count look like a competition. The important word throughout that table is automatically. Neither format wins simply because of the number of strains.

What does the research actually say about which works better?

This is where the marketing story and the scientific story can drift apart. If combining two strains is useful, it seems reasonable to think that five should be even better and 15 better still. Clinical research does not give us a rule like that.

The systematic review comparing single-strain probiotics with multi-strain mixtures looked at 65 randomised trials covering eight different health indications. In most of the matched comparisons, mixtures were not significantly more effective than the corresponding single strains. There were exceptions, including situations where a mixture performed better and others where a single strain did better.

Other research shows why the picture is complicated.

A 2023 network meta-analysis of 81 randomised trials involving more than 9,000 people with IBS found benefits with both individual strains and probiotic mixtures. Different products performed better for different outcomes. One strain ranked highly for symptom severity, while a five-probiotic mixture ranked highly for quality of life.

More recent research continues to show the same basic pattern. A 2026 systematic review of specific probiotic strains for IBS found evidence supporting several individual strains, while other strains did not show the same level of benefit.

What does that mean for someone buying an everyday probiotic?

It means “single strain” and “multi-strain” describe how a product is formulated. They do not tell you whether it works before you know what is actually in it.

For a specific clinical purpose, evidence for the exact strain or mixture becomes particularly important. For broader everyday digestive support, someone may reasonably prefer the wider organism panel of a multi-strain formulation.

Can probiotic strains work together?

Potentially, yes. This is one of the reasons multi-strain products are developed. Different microorganisms can behave differently in the digestive environment. One may tolerate stomach acid particularly well. Another may interact differently with the intestinal environment. Some probiotic strains can produce compounds that influence other microorganisms.

Combining selected strains can therefore have a reasonable scientific rationale. Where we need to be careful is with the word “synergy.”

Synergy means that the combined effect is greater than we would expect from the components individually. You cannot establish that simply by putting several probiotics into the same capsule.

A mixture would need appropriate research before we could confidently say that the strains work synergistically.

Research may show that strain A has one effect and strain B another. That gives formulators useful information. It does not automatically prove exactly what will happen when A, B and 13 other strains are consumed together.

A good multi-strain product is therefore better described as broadly formulated unless the finished combination has evidence showing something more specific.

Do more strains mean greater microbiome diversity?

This is another easy assumption to make. If your gut contains thousands of different types of microorganisms, adding 15 probiotic strains sounds as though it should permanently make the microbiome more diverse. That is too simple.

Many probiotics do not permanently settle in the gut. They may survive passage through the gastrointestinal tract, interact with the existing microbial community and perform useful functions while they are there. Their numbers can then decline after supplementation stops.

Even experts still have much to learn about why some probiotic organisms persist better in certain people than in others. A recent review notes that an individual's existing microbiome can influence whether particular probiotic organisms successfully colonise or remain only temporary visitors.

So a 15-strain probiotic provides 15 strains in the supplement. It should not automatically be described as permanently adding 15 new populations to your gut.

Microbiome diversity is influenced by a much larger picture that includes diet, environment, medicines, age and existing microorganisms.

When might a single-strain probiotic make more sense?

A single-strain probiotic is worth considering when you have a very clear reason for taking it. For example, it may suit you when:

  • A doctor or dietitian has recommended a particular strain.
  • Good clinical evidence exists for that exact strain and the issue you are trying to address.
  • You want a simple product with one clearly identified microorganism.
  • You want to know how much of that specific strain you are receiving.
  • You are using a probiotic as part of the management of a particular digestive situation.

This becomes especially important when you move from general wellness into the management of diagnosed gastrointestinal conditions.

Different probiotics can produce different effects and that finding a benefit with one type of probiotic does not establish that another probiotic will do the same thing.

Someone who has been told to take a particular strain should therefore not casually replace it with a random multi-strain product simply because the second bottle contains more organisms.

When might a multi-strain probiotic make more sense?

A multi-strain product may be attractive when the goal is broader everyday gut support rather than one very specific probiotic intervention. You may prefer a multi-strain probiotic if you:

With a single-strain product, interpretation is straightforward. If the bottle provides 10 billion CFU of one strain, those 10 billion CFU belong to that strain.

With a multi-strain probiotic, the total may be shared among all the strains.

For example:
10 billion CFU + 1 strain
and
50 billion CFU + 15 strains
describe very different formulations.

You should not divide 50 billion by 15 and assume every strain has exactly the same CFU count unless the manufacturer specifically says so. Blends are not necessarily formulated in equal proportions.

This is also why a high total CFU can be reasonable in a broad multi-strain formula. The product is delivering viable organisms across several strains rather than one.

At the same time, the larger total number does not prove greater effectiveness.

How many capsules make one serving?
A 50-billion-CFU claim may apply to one capsule in one product and two or three in another.

Does it contain a prebiotic?
Ingredients such as FOS can add a defined prebiotic component to the formulation.

How should it be stored?
Some products need refrigeration. Others are designed for room-temperature storage.

What are you taking it for?
General digestive support and a specific gastrointestinal condition are not the same use case.

These details tell you far more than whether one bottle contains five strains and another contains 15.
